Biography and career
President Angyalossy was born in 1964 in Přerov. He spent his childhood in the Slovak-Hungarian border town of Čalovo (today named Veľký Meder). Having graduated from high school in Dunajská Streda, Slovakia, he first pursued socio-legal studies in Nitra, Slovakia. In 1988, after two years’ compulsory military service, he began his legal studies at the Law Faculty of Masaryk University in Brno, which he successfully completed in 1993. He completed his doctorate in 1998 at the same University.
Mr Angyalossy was appointed as a judge in 1996. Starting that year, he was the presiding judge at the District Court in Olomouc, and from 1999 the presiding judge of the Regional Court in Ostrava at its branch in Olomouc. In 2004, he became a judge of the High Court in Olomouc and later the presiding judge. At the same time, he acted as the spokesperson of the High Court in Olomouc.
On 1 April 2017 he was appointed as a judge of the chamber of the criminal division of the Supreme Court and from the second half of 2018 he became the presiding judge of the criminal division of the Supreme Court. While in his first year at the Supreme Court, President Angyalossy was appointed as an ad hoc judge for the Czech Republic on the Joint Supervisory Body of Eurojust. Currently, he leads the working group preparing the Code of Ethics for judges of the Czech Republic.
Mr Angyalossy was appointed as President of the Supreme Court on 20 May 2020 for a 10-year term by the President of the Czech Republic, Mr Miloš Zeman.
President Angyalossy is married to Ivana, and together they have a daughter, Eva, who also works in the judiciary. Mr Angyalossy has advanced skills in the German, Hungarian and Slovak languages and basic skills in English and Russian.
