Biography and career
Born in 1957, in Coimbra, he was graduated by the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra and a Master's degree in Legal and Civil Sciences from the Faculty of Law of the Portuguese Catholic University.
He was a lawyer (1980-1983).
After concluding the 2nd ordinary course of Centro de Estudos Judiciários (CEJ - school of magistrates of Portugal), he began working as a judicial magistrate in 1986, having been a Judge at the Judicial Courts of Coimbra (1986-1987), of Criminal Instruction of Guarda (1987-1989), Marinha Grande (1989-1990), Lisbon Civil Courts (1990-1993) and Cascais Judicial Circle (1993-2005).
He was a Judge at the Courts of Appeal of Coimbra (2005-2006) and Oporto (2006-2007 and 2016-2017).
He taught Civil Law at CEJ (1997-2001).
He served as Portuguese Representative at the International Union of Magistrates, and at the European Association of Magistrates (1997-2003).
He was a Judge of the Constitutional Court elected by the Parliament (2007-2016).
He was a member of the Advisory Council of the Attorney General's Office (2017-2020).
He has been an Invited Professor at the Faculty of Law of Universidade Nova de Lisboa from 2017 to June 2024.
He has been Justice at the Supreme Court of Justice since 2020.
He took office as President of the Supreme Court of Justice on June 4th, 2024.
